Photo 1690. The white fungus, shown here, lives off pine trees and Thassos, a Greek island in the northern Aegean sea, is renowned for its pine trees. Because honey bees feed off this fungus, and it is available to the bees outside normal spring and summer flowering time, bee keepers from the mainland bring their bees over on the ferry to feed off the fungus. The honey produced has a very particular taste that you will either love or hate. The honey is available all over the island in shops and from roadside sellers. In a commercially brilliant moment, it was decided to call the product 'Pine Honey' - leaving out the word 'Fungus'. This particular shot, taken in 2000, in tiff format has a file size of 29.3 Mb. | Photo 1691. Golden Beach from above. In 2000 this was a very quiet area to stay with the choice of 3 or 4 good tavernas of a night and very little night life other than that. Check your brochures to see if its grown. This particular shot, taken in 2000, in tiff format has a file size of 29.2 Mb. Print sizes and costs are at the bottom of this page. Photo1692. To show the typical coastline around Golden Beach on Thassos, this is taken from a coastal walking path looking back toward Golden Beach and with the central mountain range in the distance. You can see that the pine trees are prevalent even on the coast. near this particular point were nesting a pair of Eleanora's Falcons, beautiful dark coloured birds of whom about 80% breed in the Greek islands each year, travelling to Madagascar and its environs during our winter. The falcon is so common to the Greeks that they cannot be blamed for thinking that it is common everywhere. As the islands get more built up, so the Eleanoras numbers dwindle. An education programme is under way. Needless to say, as a responsible member of the RSPB I watched through binoculars from afar, neither approaching nor photographing the birds. | Photo 1693. The more northern coastline of Thassos in the Greek Northern Aegean, is more dramatic. Taken from a high point - the local Monastery, this shot shows the steeper cliffs, compared with the south. This particular shot, taken in 2000, in tiff format has a file size of 29.2 Mb. Photo 1694. Strong angles of the railings of our Golden Beach Hotel lead your eye from the clipped Olive bush, across to the far side of the pool and on to the harbour below and open sea. | Photo 1695. Mentioned elsewhere is the convenience of the hydrofoil or Flying Dolphins when travelling between islands. Thassos, in the Greek Aegean group of islands, is so close to the mainland that travel by ferry is quite quick. Thassos V is the ferry we used, here unloading on Thassos. On the bridge can be seen the name and number Thassos Five, in a curious mixture of Greek letters and Roman numerals. This particular shot, taken in 2000, in tiff format has a file size of 29.1 Mb. Photo 1696. To provide shade to balconies and windows,Greek islanders will grow grape vines from ground level to the top of the house. These vines also provide grapes of course and where we see the lovely contrast between vine and white background, the grower will see the light and heat reflected off the wall, onto the grapes, ripening them quicker. | Photo 1697. Ancient monuments abound on Thassos in the Greek Aegean group
of islands and this column base was found at one of them. I found it strange,
many years ago, on first visiting a Greek ancient monument to find that,
unless they have studied ancient Greek, the modern Greek speaker cannot
understand or interpret these greek words shown on the pedestal. I thought
it would be like an English speaker reading Shakespeare but of course the
Greek civilisation is much older than that. This particular shot, taken in
2000. The original, in tiff format, has a file size of 70 Mb. Print sizes

Photo 1700. Rose is a local guide and the local reps can book a party of people for a walk in the hills of Thassos in the Greek Aegean islands. Well worth every cent, Rose, Dutch but with perfect English, is extremely knowledgable about the flora and fauna of Thassos and provides some locally made produce for the picnic lunch. Saw common buzzard quite close and also roller, sat on a wire, while out with Rose, along with this wild tortoise who just happened to cross the path we were walking.
